In 1995, South African Designer Marisa Fick-Jordaan’s interest in transitional craft forms led to the start of a recycled telephone wire weaving project in an informal settlement outside Durban. After two year’s of experimentation, fusing traditional and new techniques with cutting edge design, she started Zenzulu and registered her trademark in 1998.
Challenges presented themselves — with limited materials supply and design concepts that challenged even the most masterful of artisans. Funding for skills development was secured and a wire manufacturer was coerced into custom manufacture of shades of colours to specifications.
Today, Zenzulu design and art pieces feature in many corporate and private interiors around the world. Designs are regularly updated and manufactured to the highest quality standards, eco-friendly and fairly traded, ensuring sustainable incomes for home based weavers in four communities.
Zenzulu has become a South African design classic, receiving numerous accolades, including an Elle Decoration International Design Award in 2002. Zenzulu has featured in Interni, Marie Claire Maison, Vogue, Elle Decoration and Design exhibitions around the world.
